Save the GOP!

We wait as four years of embarrassing histrionics come to an end, before a normal transfer of power on January 20 as called for by the 20th Amendment of the US constitution.

Fraudulent Election?

A joint session of congress will open on January 6th, 2021 to record the electoral votes from each state and District of Columbia in alphabetical order.  But, most of the GOP Representatives and eleven GOP Senators plan to object to the results from several key states on the grounds that the election was fraudulent and the loser was actually the winner. This is legal, technically. But it seems to indicate that the Republicans are getting behind Trump’s delusions and taking the GOP with them.

Resuscitation Plan for GOP

  1. These eleven senators and one hundred forty representatives need to be voted out by an informed constituency.
  2. How about a platform?
    • Trade:  the zero-sum approach based on America First and onerous sanctions are not productive. Antagonizing, threatening, confusing and frustrating your customers is never a good strategy.
    • International relations: recognize that there are challenges in the world but there is no need to swagger. We are less than 5% of the world’s people, maybe we should try harder to understand the other 95%.
    • Immigration: without new immigrants we would be shrinking. To grow we need immigrants at all skill levels.
    • Climate: granted there are some big oil companies with over a million jobs. These companies and workers will need to adapt to a clean energy world. There is opportunity in this transition and the US should aspire to be a leader.
    • Guns: we need universal background checks and no more people walking around town with automatic rifles.
    • Healthcare: where is the replacement for the Affordable Care Act?
    • Taxes: stop worrying about the wealthy and their phantom job creation.
    • Defense: aircraft carriers seem like a $13B anachronism among many in the 2021 budget of $740B.

Excess taxes, wasteful spending, over-regulation etc. can always use honest review.  We also need inter party compromise and cooperation. What works should be the metric not litmus tests.

We need a sane and healthy GOP!
