Our Simple Economist

We are in some bit of danger from our elected leader who has at best a simplistic understanding of today’s world.

There are many factors which affect economic growth. These factors work in combination and taking them out of context to make blustery speeches does more harm than good. Factors such as research and development, corruption control, and cultural diversity all influence a healthy economy. Unfortunately, these are all targets for the current administration to either remove or stymie.

Problems:

  • R&D cuts to: The Agricultural Research Service, National Institutes of Health, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy are planned despite evidence that this type of investment pays enormous dividends to society.
  • Corruption Control: eliminated protections affecting student loans for fraudulent curriculums, stream pollution, transgender student rights, power plant greenhouse emissions, concentrated media ownership, and environmental hazards may benefit shareholders, but what about the rest of us?
  • Cultural Diversity: there is a positive correlation between diversity and enduring economic growth. The National Foundation for American Policy estimates that 51% of U.S. Billion-Dollar startups have been founded by immigrants. Diversity provides energy and ideas.

We can’t let this naïve and dangerous pattern continue while Canada, Mexico, France, China and Ireland fill the void we are leaving in our alt-right wake.

  • Thank you, Tim, for sharing your insights, and in a “language” I understand. Interestingly you didn’t once mention a political party. What a relief from the usual theses these days.
