What is the role of government? We may believe the government should provide protection from fire, floods, crime and foreign incursions. |
What about help for poor parents, health problems, job loss, polluted air, unsafe water or even bad decisions? According to the current Speaker of the House, Medicare, Medicaid and Obamacare violate the liberty of the taxpayers whose earnings are transferred to the less fortunate but also squash the spiritual needs of the recipients. He believes that federal programs offer a “full stomach and an empty soul.”
This thinking is straight out of Public Choice Theory sponsored by the Koch’s at George Mason University. The idea is that Democracy as currently installed robs “worthy” individuals of the fruits of their wealth . According to the Public Choice Theory the rules (Constitution) need to change. This has to be done in small steps and made iron-clad so that they can not be rescinded and “economic liberty” (for the worthy) is finally established. Voter restrictions, school privatization, diminished social support, immigration contraction and judicial bias toward big business are the steps along the way.
We need to be paying attention.
