A corporation is authorized to act legally as a person. |
A corporation does have some similarities to a person. For example both have an instinct to survive. But it is doubtful you could ask a corporation to “do the right thing” when it means sacrificing corporate viability.
Cases:
Carbon Based Extraction (coal, gas and oil): survival depends on the world continuing to burn carbon. A lot of their corporate asset value is in the ground and they want to get it out and sell it to us. They don’t want us to worry about pollution or any effect on the climate. Maybe this is why an ex lobbyist for Murray Energy Corporation has managed to take over the EPA (which is supposed to protect us from air and water pollution). |
Private Prisons: the more people incarcerated the better. Lousy schools, poor job prospects, harsh sentences are good for business. Empty cells – bad! Maybe that is why CoreCivic felt that spending $840,000 in 2018 and $3.2 million in 2005 to lobby congress was good for business. |
Drugs: prescribing drugs whether necessary or not is good for business. Non-addictive substitute solutions – bad! Killing people is a speed bump on the way to profits. Maybe that is why the Drug Makers have “invested” $2.5 Billion in the past ten years lobbying the US Congress. |
We need to be careful with these “people”!
